Yes, having read the Van Doren biography and repeatedly reread the Autobiography, I think it can be safely concluded that until married and very likely afterward he sought on a regular basis. In the biography, he refers to "low intrigues," in reference to and his decision to marry. He also makes joking reference to his vanity and points out that a Quaker youth had told him he tended toward pride. Pride and lust would appear to be his most characteristic faults, although by developing a philosophy about these things and how to deal with them he appears to have heavily mitigated any harm they did his career or life.
