Actually the South fired the first shots of the war when they shelled the Federal troops out of Ft. Sumter in April of 1861. As far as the first major battle goes, the first battle at Manas Junction was a general engaugement that was brought on by each side. Both Gen. McDowell(U.S.) and Gen. Beauregard (C.S.A) had given orders of attack around the same time. However, Beauregard's orders were misscarried and McDowell hit first.
As to the South fighting a defensive war, this was not always the case. It is true that in theory they only HAD to fight a defensive war but Gen. Lee led the Army of Northern ia on two seperate offensive campaigns in which he invaded Northern soil. The first was the Maryland Campaign of '62 which climaxed at the bloodiest day of the war in the battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam). The second invasion in '63 ended in the defeat at Gettysburg.
If Gen. Johnston had remained in command of Confederate forces in ia it is likely that no offensive campaign would ever have been mounted. However, Lee's aggressive nature demanded that he take the offensive. That's when he was at his best. Johnston, on the other hand, was quick to retreat and take the defensive position. Even if he had not been wounden at Seven Pines it is likely that Davis would have replaced him soon after he started his plans to evacuate Richmond.
