: :Are you a Unionist?
Nope. I am an Alabamian born and bred. However, I look for the truth. Many people are ashamed of the South's history and what they fought for. On one hand they want to defend their ancestors and on the other hand they can't bring themselves to defend a cause that fought for slavery. They try to remedy this by attempting to change the reasons for the war.
I have ancestors who fought and died for the Confederacy. I have yet to find out whether or not they owned any . It is unlikely they did and if so, their slaves were probably few. My people do not come from a part of the South where big plantations flourished.
If you look at every major difference between the North and South, at every issue that divided them, slavery was at the heart of each dispute. I'm not saying that every soldier in the Confederate army fought to uphold slavery. While I'm sure the overwhelming majority wanted to see slavery remain, I don't think it is likely they were willing to die to keep their rich neighbors slaves. It is more likely that the average southerner was compelled to fight in what he saw as a defense of his homeland. The sense of regionalism that pervaded America, and especially the South, at that time was strong. It is hard to understand for people of our time. I think that is one factor that is often overlooked.
Dang, I sure rambled on for a long time in answering your one simple question!!!
