: what is the difference between the movie an dnovel in the great gatsby
As far as Fitzgerald's imagery goes, the book is (of course) far superior to the movie. Because Fitzgerald himself was not involved in the making of the movie (he died many years before), it is just the director's (Jack Clayton) interpretation of the masterpiece. As a result it sometimes strays from the point Fitzgerald was trying to make in his writing. As far as the acting goes, Mia Farrow presented a rather shallow, flat version of Daisy, and the man who played Tom was completely miscast. Robert Redford did the best of character portrayal as Gatsby, but the rest of the faults of the movie subtract from his sensitive work. If this is a question of whether you are going to read the book or watch the movie, definitely read the book. The movie is by far inferior, and will not give you even a mediocre understanding of the content and message of the book.
