You'd think that if he was a strong man that he would've been proud of his poor backround and his family instead of changing his name, but maybe that was the only thing thata he could've done in order to save his family from being affected by the business that he was in. If Daisy was after money instead of love, then maybe he didn't want her to figure out who he really was. When his dad came back at the end of the book, that just shows what a different person he was as James Gatz though. I guess mostly, it was a weakness that he ran away from who he really was to try and create another life instead of fixing the one he had.
