Gatsby was from the West, the newest hick place in the world at the time. He, Nick, and Tom all were westerners who moved to the east and became the "new rich," those without real background who came into money and wanted desperately to be accepted into the upper cl. Gatsby wanted to be rich, but moreover, he wanted notoriety. He wanted the fulfillment of every crazy, outrageous dream he could conjure up. He actually got it. He was wealthy and famous, and he "had" Daisy. But it wasn't enough, because Gatsby did not consider human frailty. Like Jordan, he did not expect that others would be as "careless" as himself. Daisy did love him, in her own selfish way. But Gatsby didn't want to reach his goals. He had Daisy's love, and he knew it. But really, nothing would ever, ever be enough. Gatsby's real dream was to keep getting, more and more, because no dream was ever large enough.
