“If it wasn’t for the mist w could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby.
“You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.”
“…(At that moment) the colossal significance of the light now vanished forever.” (Pg.94)

The green light for Gatsby was like an enchanted object. For him it represented hope. His goal in life was that he would one day be reunified with Daisy, the love of his past. In order to regain Daisy’s love he makes himself the man she would so honestly adore, by being successful, and worthy of praise.
As Gatsby looks out the window he is disheartened by reality. His fascination of Daisy leads his mind to think up an untangle reality. Nick states that he sees the green light begin to fade. In addition the fog is too dense to see the light representing Gatsby’s emotions. He wishes to repeat his past and this is impossible. As the light fades, Gatsby realizes his dream is beyond reality and he becomes disheartened.
Throughout the book the green light reappears. First Gatsby is standing out on his lawn looking across the bay at it. He ignores his party, hoping that Daisy will one day show up at one of them. Second he looks at the light in his room after being reunited with Daisy (at this point Nick notices it is fading.) Third, at the end of the book the light again reappears as it represents a how Gatsby worked harder each day for his dream. Fitzgerald leaves us with the belief that no matter how many dreams fail and sadden us we never give up, we only continue to dream up more.
From The Great Gatsby we learn that failure of Gatsby’s dream, the American dream is unavoidable because reality comes into play. If dreams can not be played out in society or with ideals they are not usually fulfilled. Gatsby wants to repeat his past, regain the love of a married woman with a child, and after 5 years as new man. If Daisy was in love with Gatsby as a poor man could she love him even though he’s changed? Even though we dream endlessly it can’t harm our motivation. Sadness only comes into play when are dreams are too good to be true. Only ‘real’ life can be obtained, but it’s fun to think otherwise.
