If you had the book, or a brain, or even eyes, you would know that gatsby was a bootlegger, he had a chain of backyard chemists and he covered this up by telling everyone that he inherited his money from his family out west. Gatsby had shares and played the market and his long distance phone calls were all from people who were makret players with him, or bootlegging contacts.
