You folks who admire the big N really ought to read
George Bataille, to get a sense of the kind of things
he (N) inspired. In a footnote in one of his books
(the title escapes me) Bataille remarks something to
the effect that, "I agree with Nietzche that to be
truly free, one must commit evil [acts]". It is the old thing
about transgression being the path to true freedom (an
essentially gnostic idea).
Bottom line: N was no friend of civilization, this or any other.
He was clever, he was brilliant, he was innovative, but his words
are death, his words are the shrivelling of all beauty
and sweetness and innocence...but, hey, no one is perfect, eh?
