: Why exactly did hemingway go to paris? Did he hate how the American society and economy was becoming and thought that Paris would give him a better place to write and express himself?
Curiously, he and his new wife, Hadley, were saving their
money and converting it to lira for their planned move to
Italy, a place that Hemingway was familiat with during his
short wartime expiriences there.
But while working on a magazine or a newspaper (I
forget which) he met Sherwood Anderson, the author
of Winesberg Ohio and whom Hemingway admired, who told
him that all of the action in terms of the arts was
happening in Paris. It was where TS Eliot and John Dos
Pos and James Joyce and F. Scott Fitzgerald were. And
the Impressionist and Expressionist painters were. It was
were the Dada art movement was just morphing into Cubist
and Surrealism. It was where all of the budding artists,
no matter what their matier was, were congregating.
Anderson offered to write a letter of introduction to
Gertrude Stein who could introduce Hemingway to other
people who could help his career. So they changed their
minds and the rest, as they say, is history.
