There is the openning one or two paragraphs that
describe Krebs before he went off to war; he is at
a Methodist University and a member of a fraternity.
All of these things imply a degree of regimentation
that he has tacitly agreed to. Methodist = the tenets
of an organized religion. University = going to cles,
studied, learning something as a career. The Fraternity =
agreeing to the rules of the particualr House, pledging, etc.
And when he goes to war he joins the marines. At that time
the Marines did not draft recruits. Men volunteered, so again,
Krebs has chosen the regimentation of this particular unit.
And the fighting at Bellow Woods (was it Bellow Woods mentioned
in the story?) was the major battle for the US Marines during
the great war.
Now take all of the examples of regimentation that Krebs acceeded
to before the war, and compare them to how he acts afterwards. Towards
his mother, girls in general, a , a career. This seems to be the
point of the story...how Krebs was changed by his expiriences.
