: : : PJK,

Do you still remember or should you go back to your books to know everything you wrote about The Pilar.. (the fishing boat)

It was fantastic!

Agatha

we were introduced to mr hemingway by nicolas cage & meg ryan by way of that movie they made together called "city of angels" seth (cage) asks maggie (ryan)"whats the that pear taste like? she answers something like "you know what a pear tastes like" he knows! asks "but what does it taste like to you? discribe it" she does! that is the what hemingway did in "a moveable feast" when he discribes eating oysters with a little lemon juice washed down with white wine, I never had an oyster or wanted one before reading that dialogue I could live on them now!

: : Oysters are only a start...

: : "We have an icebox that runs along the stern of the boat [the Anita, Sloppy Joe Russell's boat]
: : with bait iced down on one side and beer and fruit on the other. The best bait for big marlin is cero mackeral or kingfish of a pound to three pounds weight. The best beer is Hatuay [pronounced Ah'tway, a Cuban beer only available in Cuba or Key Wset, at El Meson de Pepe], the best fruits in season are Filipino mangoes, iced pineapple, and alligator pears. Ordinarily, we eat the alligator pears for lunch with a sandwich, fixing them with pepper and salt and a freshly squeezed lime. When we run into the beach to anchor, swim and cook a hot lunch on days when fish are not running, you can make French dressing for the pears, adding a little mustard. You can get fine, big avacados to feed five people for 15 cens."

: : From Marlin off the Morro: A Cuban Letter, printed in Esquire Magazine, in the autumn of 1933, and re-printed in By-Line: Ernest Hemingway, a book containing many of his magazine and newspaper articles. This would have been written a couple of years before he bought his own fishing boat, The Pilar. Hence the Anita. If you ever go to Key West, the best oysters on the 1/2 shell can be found at either Pepe's on Front Street or Crabby 's on Duval.

: : Ask ne how I know...8-)

: : hth
: : Pjk

:
: YES PETER...Oysters are only a start!

: What about lion tenderlion? Hemingway's African writings make me want to try it! But...I don't know if I will when we get to Africa!

: I can't put my thumb on the page quotes.

: Paul
