: Lets look at this at a spectrum standpoint; on the left side is good (billy lies there w/his innocence, good nature, lack of guile, etc..), in the middle is the spectator-one that does not interfere but would like to side with good; but judges both (vere lies in the middle, god stood by and watched his son die. but god sides w/good. he does not interfere with earthly issues, but will judge them. vere likes billy, and thinks he is innocent, etc..) claggart lies on the right with evil.(he resides and punishes those in the bowels of the ship, he lies, etc..)
