bart can be seen as death in life because he is never heard...he is mysterious and unknown to most...even his employer. no one knows what death is like...not even the author or creator of this symbolic character. also, remember that bart is an obstruction but never really heard or taken into consideration. he is a freak. we only acknowledge death when we are affected by it...same thing happens in bart; nobody cares til he is in the way, so to say. as a schitsophrenic or depressive? no just unheard and misunderstood. he tries to avoid lying..."prefer not to". he tries to be understood by living where he wishes without restraints. i think he is out of the usual but not "crazed". i can also see bart as a christ figure b-cus of his eminant presence and unbearable silence. we think god does not speak to us but it is we who do not listen to him til we finally have no other "options". hope to have helped. i am not sure when you r paper is to be created or when this msg was posted but I am working on bart also. 4/10/2000
: Student from Germany has to write research paper on Bartleby and needs HELP.
: The crucial question for me at the moment is: Can you conceive Bartleby as a metaphor for "death in life"
: and still combine that with the many psychological interpretations that see him
: as a depressive or even schizophrenic case? Any suggestions more than welcome!!!
