I think the situation with Jane is that he is avoiding contact
with her because he's afraid she's lost her innocence, the
innocence he wants to protect in everyone. This is seen in the
beginning of the story when he mentions to his room-mate, Stradlater,
that she keeps all her 'kings' in the back row when playing checkers,
this is a hint at how she keeps her ity, and Holden further tells
Stradlater to ask Jane if "..she stills keeps all her kings in the back row..."
when Stradlater leaves for a date with her.
