The significance of Holdens red Hunting hat is that when he wore it backwards it represented him wanting to be the catcher in the rye or the person who save childrens innocence and everytime they came close to the edge of loosing that innocence he would bring them back. The reason for him wanting to save childs innocense is because since his parents sent him away from home he has learned all the darker sides of society and wants to save other people (especailly children) from feeling the pain that he has felt.
