Evan,
One connection (that Salinger signifies by his own life and in The Catcher) is reclusivism. Salinger lives a humble life, deemed reclusive by the media and much of society, in the northeast. In The Catcher in the Rye Holden wnats to live a recluse life in a cabin in the woods (out west) where he would pretend to be a deaf-mute and would communicate only through written dialogue. Another connection between the two is apparently the belief in the goodness and innocence of youth. I have heard that Salinger has done work with local school groups and youth organizations (before becoming "recluse"?) and Holden's favorite caharacters, those whom Holden likes to communicate with or think of mostly, in The Catcher are kids...his sister Phoebe, his deceased brother Allie, the two kids (brothers) he meets at Phoebe's school, and the kid he sees walking with his parents...
Other connections (I think) could be love of knowledge, a "distaste" for typical "Hollywoodism"...such as movie stars, egotistical people,...show offs.
Evan, I hope this helps,
Trey
