I'm not sure it has anything to do with rebellion. The book ends with Caulfield in a mental institution. That doesn't sound like someone were are meant to emulate or admire. We would all do better to try to fit in rather than and moan. Caulfield does a lot of complaining. I don't call that rebellion. In fact, he is a rather typical 1950s r -- the wisecracks, the sarcasm, the faux ennui, etc. What acts are rebellion are there in the book? Well, probably the worst thing Caulfield does is invite a prostitute. When he sees how young she is, he is turned off. She just looks pathetic and sad, not like the movies. He does nothing and lets her go. Some rebel. I guess he's just crazy mixed-up kid.
