***: What do you think is the meaning of Holden's question about where the ducks go in the winter?:
well, i am definately not an expert, but we discussed this in a cl of mine, and we decided it basically stood for his immaturity and childish behavior. The question about the ducks is one a child would ask, not a 16 year old boy...you know??***
It could be an issue of immaturity, but in my own oppinion, a child would ask the question and accept whatever answer he gets. Holden digs to deep: does a man pick them up in a truck? do they fly south? Maybe he is questioning what happens when you just don't belong. He obviously has had a rejection streak, and maybe he is at a point in his life where the pond has frozen over and he is there unsure whats next...fly south or wait for some guy to come take care of it. Or maybe it it is much simpler then that...perhaps he is just aware of his surroundings and curious and intregued by the simpler stuff. It is pretty aparent that he is an observant guy the way he gets so crazy over Jane stacking her kings in the back row. I think that is also a possibility. Maybe it is just a comic relief...sometimes people tend to over yze Salinger, when I read it, i personally found it to be not only amusing, but a good question, where do they go anyway??
