Holden wants to know where the ducks go in the winter. He wants to know how they escape the cold ie, the pain of life. He wants to knokw if they fly south (which is why he wants to move out west) or if some guy in a truck picks them up and takes them to the zoo. The guy in the truck represents the catcher in the rye, sheltering the ducks from the harshness of the real world.

Holden's failed attempts to communicate with Jane represent his virutal unability to communicate with anyone. He feels removed from everything, but he has no means of commmunicating that to anyone.
