d On the 23rd October this year i watched a very disturbing doentary'Orangutangs'on channel ten which exposed the cruelty to bears in India and Pakistan. With tears in my eyes i watched Dancing Bears being put through an ordeal of pain and suffering. I never realized the majority of animal abuse being portrayed in this bitter world, and more so the fact that it is my species guilty. This programme i watched was a real eye opener and heart burner.Watching these animals being put through so much pain was unbearable... some of these cruel acts were as follows:
> The fact that the bear is taken away from its killed parents at such a young age
> The owner removing the bears claws and teeth for own protection and been given a unrealable amount of food and water as their only diet
> THe way the owners teach the bears to dance
-placing the bears on hot plates to teach the bears to lift their legs (as to dance) but really are doing it because of the excrucianating pain.
-placing a bar rod in the bears nose as to lead the animals around....I watched as the bears tried to grab the lead when the owners were walking to fast and the bears nose was being ripped at but could not get grip because of having no claws
- belting the back of the bears legs to teach it to stand up straight for a long period of time..as the programme explained some dancing bears are to withdraw 18 hours of this per day entertaining and giving its owner an income from tourists
>the sporting games they have over their with dancing and normal brown bears. At $30 Australian dollars the pakistanese watch as terrified and armless bears are savagly mauld at by 6 or so savage pittbull cross dogs.If the bears claws and teeth had not been previously removed they are so because they believe it makes it a fair fight! As the host of the show explained, the particular dogs used in this sport are able to take on a creature four times its height and weight...how does this make it a fair fight for the bears. I watched the bears terrified at knowing what was about to happen, either because they had been their before and luckily survived, heard the barking of the savage dogs and became petrified and also the smell of the bears blood from the round before. I watched as these animals were dragged..literally draged out into the arena, clenching their paws into the dirt trying to pull back, but once again because their claws had been removed they had no chance.Once the bear was tied to a stake in the arena & the game was on, dogs.. savage dogs, running into where the desperate bear awaits barking and biting their way through covering their own fur with the blood of the crying bear. The bears tried to defend themselves but the odds were not in their favour. Dropping to the groung in extreme pain and shock the dogs are pulled off the bear and that is the end of the sport. AS i watched this tears were drippng down my face and as a seventeen year old watching this on a television set i couldn't understand how they could pay their $30 Australian dollars and sit and enjoy watching such a viscious act of cruelty to such a beautiful creature, even children as young as seven were watching this sport as though it was normal.....normal is for a child to see this creature in the wild or in a zoo,not in a blood bath. Some good was demonstrated at the end of this programme such as sanctuaries for bears who have been handed in or have been taken off their cruel owners and are now been given the proper care and life they should have been recieving in the first place. It is great to see humans help these animals but not every 1200 dancing bears in Pakistan can be saved from the cruelest people ever. I hope this letter has touched you as it has me now and forever, please publish an article on the cruelty of bears so this story can hopefully have a strong impact on your readers as it did me.....THankyou
