I have an exam on the book this summer, so I am in a similar position to yourself, but I have a little that I can offer you. There are main themes in 'A Portrait'. Stephen is the main subject through whose eyes, and with, we experience the novel. He has different attitudes to influences in his life that need exploring, the Catholic Church, women, natuionalism and most of all his development as an artist. He is always an introspective on-looker to his peers, an enjoys the idea of martyrdom for his art. He is extremely intelligent and gifted with a fascination with words from an early age, perhaps stemming from his bad eyesight. If you want to email me your ignment title I could maybe help you with a plan.
