from the discussions i've had, and from what we know about joyce's fondness for juxtaposing that which is traditionally considered high with that which is traditionally considered low, the theory that "u.p.:UP" is another way of saying "you urinate with an ion" seems plausible. it seems as if the postcard is meant to insult the recipient (alfie, is it?) by insinuating that ual acts and excretion are the same thing for him. given bloom's scatological desires (he asked molly to walk through manure once, so he could smell it on her, he thinks of the sound of molly's urine dribbling into the chamber pot as musical, he likes to kiss her melonous smellonous ocks, etc.) this doesn't seem to be too much of a stretch. won't find that stuff in ia woolf, now will you?
