Hi! I've just started studying Dubliners too! I think Joyce has named the story: "A Little Cloud" to suggest that Gallaher is a "little cloud" of hope to Little Chandler as he represents someone who has managed to escape the paralysis of Dublin life and made a success of himself in "exotic" London. However, Gallaher also casts a "little cloud" over Chandler's life as he realises that he himself cannot escape, and this makes him become dissatisfied with his life and the frustration at his entrapment ultimately causes him to abuse his child.
