: well, haven't seen any new postings for quite some time, so i figured i'd put something on just for the hell of it. in my western literature cl, we had a discussion about whether or not the ideas behind joyce's work were worth the effort it takes to plow through his prose and get to those ideas. i argued that the experience of the prose itself is the most fulfilling aspect of reading joyce's work, and i maintained that even if i don't understand any of the meaning behind the prose (and, while i was reading the wake, that was most often the case) the reading is still worthwhile, if only because the language is so beautiful and funny and adventurous. what think you all? do you think that sometimes joyce's ideas aren't worth the trouble it takes to reach them? or are the linguistic experiemnts enough to make the reading worth your while?
