There is a valid argument that this book has no plot
Joyce tried many times to get it published in England
to no avail. He wrote several mcripts and finally
an American company published it. Imagery.... well,
Pound called him a genius and said that he used
"realism" like no other. The novel has been called
"rude, foul, powerful and an extraordinarily dirty study
of the upbringing of a young man by Jesuits." One
British critic said that it was ugly, and that if he didn't
show some restraint and proportion, he would never
gain any readers.... what an , right? It may be
that Joyce never meant to have a PLOT, it was not
a coming of age novel. it was more like a young
man dealing with guilt... It's a pretty hard read,
why are you reading it?
google.com has some great sites on it... real easy..
