This question is worthy of term paper if not a thesis. Here are some questions to ask yourself to get started.
What does the snow symbolize? What is like snow? What does snow do? Does it leave a trace when it melts? Do living beings like Michael Furey leave traces when they die?
What does it say about Gabriel that his soul swoons at the sound of the falling snow? Do you know anyone like him? What does it say about Gabriel that he cannot make love to Gretta?
Does Joyce use the word "snow" in any special way throughout "The Dead"? Do the words "cold" and "coldly" have special significance to the story? What is the effect on you when you read that Gabriel speaks "coldly" to his wife? What role does Bartell D'Arcy's "cold" have on the flow of events? According to Aunt Kay, how many people have "colds"?
