Women play a very important role in Portait of the artist. They are all in extremes, for example the glorified to the street . I recently read an essay on portrait on a feminist prospective and here is what I have come up with: 1) Mother and child: women are a one dimensional projection of Stephen's narcissistic imagination. He sees thing in complementary pairs, such as male and female, father and mother, and politics and religion. He also, within the first few pages sees the mother as a sorce of physical pleasure by her sweet smell. Does not like her vulerability, he sees it as "not nice." By the time Stephen is old enough to be at the table for x-mas dinner, mother can no longer sheild him from politics and religion. 2) and : Stephen's ambition in the novel is to deflower the blessed herself... has continuous sensual thoughts about women and... I didn't get a chance to finish the rest of the essay, but I know that Suzette Henke wrote it and it is quite good I think it's called "Stephen Sedalus, a feminist reading of Portrait.
