: Hey, please nominate a couple of your favorite writers, essayists, spoken word performers. They need to be fairly well established professionals (not your boyfriend). I'm looking for the types of contributors to "This American Life," but not these exact same people. Who are the best and brightest new voices shaping this generation? Please give me your list and a few reasons why. The names may go into a proposal for a major PBS program. Thanks. Ian, a producer for Oregon Public Broadcasting.
I think that Anne LaMott is a good recommendation for contemporary authors. I'm not sure if she quite falls into GenX, just know that she's currently in her 30s. Her writing is beautiful and clean. She is a real person who has had abortions, love affairs, drug addiction, single motherhood, and finally, came to some kind of terms with herself and a higher power and found -- not really peace -- but an agreement to live life as well as she can. This is almost atypical of many I know in their 30's. And, although I (at 27) don't personally identify with her situation, I see that my older sister (at 37) is nearly a carbon copy. And, indeed, my whole life I have been too wary of such pitfalls to have gone too far into them. I've often wondered if this is generational, too.
