The best resources I know for "defining" Generation X (or any other generation) are William Strauss and Neil Howe, authors of the book GENERATIONS. They have also had a go at us with the book 13TH GEN (since we are the "unlucky" 13th generation of Americans). While it helped me define my own ill will toward Baby Boomers, its pop culture references are now outdated. However, the overall look at generational trends is fascinating and pretty dead on.

Their next book 4TH TURNING managed to drop some of inflammatory names of generations they had previously used. It has some valuable observations, too, and spawned their web site http://www.fourthturning.com/ which I highly recommend.

For the literary side, try SHOPPING IN SPACE, a British book, which may be out of print.
