I think most would agree you are a Gen-Xer, maybe on the cusp. These generational categories are really quite new and arbitrary. Some earlier Gen-Xers are vexed by the continual expansion of the category, however, we are realizing that is how generations work. As the years p by, it becomes more inclusive (while not overlapping into 80s-born babies-1980 is technically the last year of the 70s)because of common experiences shared by people born within a generation. Of course, it is not uniform. Some of us have parents that are babyboomers, some are from the previous generation.
The 80s really seem to be the defining characteristic for Gen-Xers, so most people like to include anyone who spent their youth and/or adolescent and college years in the 80s (granted they were born between 1965-1980).
Also, some people take birth rates. The boom "echo" occurred in the 1980s and 90s. For example, in 1960 there were between 4 and 4.5 million live births, in 1970 that figure was at 3.75 and in 1980 a little over 3.5. However, by 1990 that figure shot up once again to nearly the same number as the 1960 rate. By 2000, it has decline again as now it is the Gen-Xers who are having kids.
I am sure there are people who have there own definition, or who pick and choose what they think defines Gen-X, but that only proves my point. As I have mentioned in a previous post, I was born in the 70s and most of my "memories" are token traits attributed to Gen-X these days, yet some may not consider me one. However those memories and trends are mine also, and if Gen-Xers are claiming them for their own, well, I guess I've got to fit in somewhere. It's funny how eager we are to be categorized, isn't it?
Have fun,
Menna
Just don't go buying any cheesy 80s nostalgia, ok? :) Kidding-I just heard that jelly things are back in among kids, is all...
: I was born in 1980, so what does that make me? All of this information is so confusing.
