Greggo - I agree with everything you state about the cool literary places to be. I think NYC may have been cool a little earlier than the '40s with Dorothy Parker and the round table at the Algonquin around the '20s - '30s. Anyway, I believe that with the web's connections, people are coagulating less in one spot and conversing on a more global scale. If you read a lot of the best-seller's, they are becoming more diverse. They are not always set in NYC or LA or Paris but Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and Miami. This shows that fewer writers are living in the big hubs with one another and displays different backgrounds. I would have to give LA a big mark though because more writers are finding their books becoming movies and want to be in the action of converting to script and production.
