I am a Junior at Chaparral High School, which is found in the district of riverside of southern California. I am writing in opposition to your standing. I believe that Huck Finn gives students of today a visualization of a world that they cannot see (thank God). It is a part of our history, by banning this book one is allowing us to turn our heads as if this period in our history never happened. The book is rascist, it has to be. Whites were back then and that is a fact. They still are today (not all but some still are). What is your goal by banning this book? When we deny our mistakes from our past we are bound to repeat them. I am mexican/american and in AP US History, we are right now studding literature which was written against this "mudd race." I do not get offended because it is part of our history. Huck Finn is part of the American Culture. It opens our eyes, to things we would never vouluntarily look at, but when forced to look at, we see a completely different world and by doing so we learn. Please instead of asking adults, why not ask students it is us who will be reading the book. Question kids who have read the book. Now I am completely against teaching the book at an earlier level than 11th grade but I believe it is a wonderful et to the English curriculim. Please e-mail me back, as this has been a topic of debate in my english cl for no one in there understands why this book should be banned, and maybe you could enlighten me. Thank you for your time.
sincerrly,
Amaris J. Jimenez
