I am not sure there is a metaphor. I believe what he is trying to express is a taking in of nature. The eyeball is circular, meaning that he can take in everything around him 360 degrees all at once. The "transparent" connects to the line above of "all mean egotism vanishes" - he is nothing in comparison to the spectacle of nature but instead a particle of God; he is one with nature.
