Not that I don't understand what you're saying, and you're right, the average American student is rather ignorant (including myself!), but I always try to take a positive approach when conversing with others who are reluctant to put in the effort, especially where literature is concerned. Calling students 'sloth[s]' and threatening them with ignorance is not going to get too many people to read anything. I'm not sure what will, but as any psychologist will tell you negative reinforcement does not work.

Here's my advice: Just try reading the book. If you don't like it, then try other books. If you don't like any books, then that may just be who you are. One does not have to enjoy literature to be intelligent, I would just hope that every one tries to be openminded.
