: So what's up with all of the gender and racial changes of the voice in The Song of Solomon? Has anyone heard any theorys about this? It's very sensual and a bit disarming.
ANSWER:
The gender changes take place, because the Song is a conversation between a man and a woman. It is easy to understand in the context when you know that when the speaker says "my love," it is the male speaking, and when the speaker says, "beloved," it is the female speaking.
The only comment that may be misconstrued as "racial" would be when the girl refers to her self as "black but comely" in chapter one. She was not speaking of herself as one of the black race. She is a Shulamite, from the Jewish town of Shunem in the land of Israel. If you'll read the very next verse, you will see that the blackness of her skin is due to her being out in the sun too long.
I hope that this has helped.
