I also read Tonio Kroger up to the halfway point or even further, but found the style rather dull and uninteresting. Death in Venice, by contrast, is an extremely vibrant piece of literature, but surely one which has to be read in its original language. It is impossible, nonetheless, to call Thomas Mann boring.
