Falstaff doesn't love either of the two wives, but mearly tries to win them in order to gain their large amount of wealth. The wives are insulted by Falstaff's fabrication of love, and decide to play many tricks on him to teach him a lesson. Falstaff also never admits to trying to cheat the wives, and is not figured out until the end of the play when the wives tell their husbands of Falstaff's advances.
