Ariel is a spirit of the air, and of creativity. He/she/it is a delicate creature who, dispite not being human, feels compassion and pity. Ariel is rather mischevious for a lot of the play, which gives an impression of youth. Ariel seems to have a lightness about his/her/it's body and manner, which adds to the "air sprite" quality, and a very mystical way of expressing him/her/itself through gestures and facial expressions.

There are many interpretations of Ariel out there, and this is just mine. I can also say that as an actor myself, the costume may help. It always seems to help me when I'm trying to find a character when I get the costume, especially for someone like Ariel. And another thing: don't be shy about bringing your own ideas into the character. There is no wrong answer.
